Drawing is my playtime and I experience it as a calming and meditative process. I love to create a mysterious quality through line and shape, pattern and colour, highlight and shadow. Initially by “taking a line for a walk”, intriguing organic shapes will form on the paper. At this stage, in an intuitive process that eschews pre-planning, I sense and respond to what the drawing needs.
Sometimes I draw the suggestion of the everyday things I love, like fruits, plants forms, or a favourite object. Sometimes the drawings are purely abstract and this non-objectiveness allows me to better explore concepts and feelings like love, justice or the beauty of nature. I may add pattern, broken lines, areas that are partly hidden or misted over. All these elements are designed to create mystery or intrigue, often with a touch of humour.
Drawing is like life – things are often not clearly defined or visible. I approach drawing as symbolism and a metaphor for my experience of life.
